Professor Joshua S. Mostow received his doctorate in the Comparative Literature and Literary Theory Program of the University of Pennsylvania. He has studied at International Christian University (Mitaka, Japan), Universite de Paris (III, VII, and Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes), and Gakushuin University (Tokyo). His research interests include inter-relations between text and image, especially in Japanese culture; Japanese women’s writing in the court tradition; the ideological construction of the Heian period in the modern era; Japanese “national erotics” (that is, the use of sexuality in cultural self-definition).
