The rule-based, open, and multilateral order is under increasing stress. Initially, rising powers, such as China, as well as disruptors, such as Russia, appeared to be the main challengers. Yet, contestations increasingly emanate from within liberal societies. We explore challenges to the liberal international order that come from states that helped establish and maintain the liberal international order. We will focus on the US and its European allies but seek to engage on a broader discussion on the role of Latin America.
