Carl Schmertmann is Professor of Economics at Florida State University and Research Associate and former Director at FSU's Center for Demography and Population Health. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin (B.S., Econ.) and the University of California, Berkeley (Ph.D., Econ.). His current research interests include developing new methods for forecasting cohort fertility, and estimating demographic rates in small areas with sparse data. He has been a visiting professor or researcher in demography at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil), the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Texas, and the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. He is the former Editor of Demographic Research. He has published in Demography, Population Studies, Population & Development Review, Demographic Research, Journal of the American Statistical Association, European Journal of Population.
